Georgian Languages Needs Not to Be Turned into English Language but Taken Care of

Language is a living organism that grows, develops and changes together with the society. Therefore, it needs to be taken care of, even for the simple reason that in case of loss, its resuscitation is impossible.

As stated by Zinaida Gabichvadze, Doctor of Philological Science, Visiting Professor at Caucasus International University, Georgian nation realized the danger of language loss on April 14, 1978. They understood that the mother tongue is an essential tool for preserving identity and protecting cultural heritage.

Collocations and lexical units that are characteristic of a foreign language destroy the specific structure of the language. Vocabulary accurately reflects the history of the nation, the words that entered our language from the language of the dominant country. Today, it can be said that a new stage has begun in the history of the modern Georgian language, which was caused by its close contact with English language.

International relations, direct diplomatic contacts with foreign countries, news in almost all fields of science and technology, internet, modern information and communication technologies condition close connection with Georgian language. The introduction of foreign words is justified only if we do not find their analogue in Georgian language.

According to Zinaida Gabichvadze, we have valuable, sonorous Georgian words that can be used instead of Barbarisms, but we still cannot do without their fashionable analogues: “dalaikeba” - like, “dedlaini - deadline, “daklikeba” - click, “emergency” - ambulance, “implementatsia”- implementation, etc. There are many examples. The reason for all this is the lack of knowledge!

There are many barbarisms of Russian origin in Georgian language (“Plosko”, “Krishna”, “Kukhna”, “Atviorka”, “Stoli”, etc.), which have been established in our existence and language for decades.

Zinaida Gabichvadze considers barbarisms of English origin as a means of emphasizing pseudo-education and high social status.

The media has the power to make people speak its own language - every word transmitted through it is listened by a global audience that establishes it into their everyday life.

There are many ways to avoid barbarisms, the actions of Georgian language specialists, scientists from different fields and the corresponding actions of each of us is considered as a starting point by Zinaida Gabichvadze. We can protect Georgian language with such simple actions as speaking Georgian fluently, rejecting barbarisms and “slang” and encouraging others to do the same.

Georgian language needs not to be turned into English, but to be taken care of. This is the duty of each of us. If we do not do that, this means that we eventually reject true integration into the European scientific-educational space, developing the national language and culture in accordance with the European requirements.
