Sports journalism had only a recreational function for some time. However, this approach has changed over time and today it occupies one of the most important places in the hierarchy of forms of journalism.&nbsp;Nowadays, sports events are often the focus of modern media: in media it is given a separate space; relevant programs, stories are being actively prepared ...&nbsp;Today’s Mediascope is about Sports Journalism. The field which is the most popular part of modern media. Elene Bilikhodze, a sports commentator on Georgian Radio (Public Broadcaster) talks about its importance, needs and advantages.&nbsp;&nbsp;The very first examples of sports journalismInformation about chess written by Homer in Greece is considered to be the first achievement of sports journalism. Records on wrestling, boxing, shooting, and, of course, the ancient Olympic Games also appear later. The latter was entertaining at the time, and since it was recognized as a common public religious holiday, it was considered that spreading information was a form of entertainment too.&nbsp;Later, when attitudes towards sports changed dramatically and the principle of competition emerged, sports reviews began to fight for leading positions in the hierarchy of journalism and it can be boldly said that it is an integral part of the modern media space nowadays.&nbsp;Field of Interest of Sports JournalismIt covers many topics. Obviously, we are no longer talking about big sports competitions and especially popular sports. One of the top priorities of sports journalism today is to promote healthy lifestyle, especially in the current epidemic situation.&nbsp;Sports Journalism in Modern Media Space&nbsp;The scarcity of sports programs is not observed in the modern media space and this is really to be welcomed.&nbsp;I cannot say that the standard of information dissemination is violated in modern sports journalism today, however, it can be said that there are some shortcomings when it comes to transfers, revenues, doping scandals. But today such an attitude to the issue can also be called a kind of marketing ploy.&nbsp;It is important to be covered!It is important to prepare materials on the development of Parasports, because the attitude towards parasportsmen in our country has changed so much that today they are in leading positions in various sports. One of the motivators for the development of this direction was the first silver medal won by parachutist Nini Tibilashvili at the Tokyo Paralympic Games. The attitude of the society has also changed over time: we can already fight for medals at the Paralympic Games.&nbsp;I think it is also very important to prepare programs and reports on the development of sports infrastructure and management. If these two segments in the country meet modern standards, it will become one of the main pillars of the development of sports tourism. At the same time, the country will have a real ambition to fight for hosting major international competitions, which will have a positive impact not only on sports but also on the country’s economy.&nbsp;Sports Journalism on Multimedia Platforms - Advantages and DisadvantagesConsidering modern technologies, online media is especially popular among young people nowadays.&nbsp;Obviously, every format has its charm. It can be said that the existing resources allow us to think only about the advantages and priorities, that is why the media is constantly trying to correct the shortcomings in this direction.&nbsp;Sports News in the Newscasts&nbsp;Today, the public interest in sports is so great that there are cases when the media start broadcasting programs talking about sports triumph.&nbsp;Due to Georgian reality, when world wrestler Lasha Talakhadze performs, everyone tries to be the first to film this event from a different angle and then release exclusive footage.&nbsp;It is Important for Success in Sports Journalism ...Of course, education. This is not just about sports journalism. After education, interest and love for sports is the main foundation that becomes the main message of this education.&nbsp;To be well aware of all kinds of sports is impossible, but you should always try to prepare well for the meeting with any respondent and gain his/her trust.&nbsp;Trust is Most Important!&nbsp;The trust of a respondent is most important. In this regard, I am very happy and proud, because any athlete provides me with the exclusive information after the end of the competition.&nbsp;Gaining and then maintaining the respondent’s trust should be our top priority. Sports Journalism as a Popular Field of Modern Media

Reportage has a special place among journalism genres. Some media theorists even call it the “king” of the genres.&nbsp;Reportage requires a reporter on site. S/he himself/herself is a firsthand eyewitness to the development of events. The journalist with his/her reportage should make the viewers feel as if they are also participants in the story.&nbsp;Media theorists also point out that the main focus of the reportage is the journalist’s point of view, as he tries to show the audience the dynamics of the event at all stages of its development - from beginning to end.&nbsp;Today’s mediascope is on reportage. Our respondent is Irma Choladze, the regional correspondent of the Public Broadcaster’s news program “Moambe”, who is also a student at CIU Doctoral Program in Mass Communication. She herself tells us about the “sweet melancholy” of being a reporter.&nbsp;“King of Genres”&nbsp;German media theorists and practicing journalists call the reportage the “King of Genres”. I reckon that it is, indeed, one of the most distinguished among the journalism genres.Characteristic features of the reportage are: the clarity of the story and a viewer’s feeling that s/he is also at the epicenter of events together with the reporter.&nbsp;Skills: inborn and learned&nbsp;To prepare a good reportage, you need skills such as:&nbsp;<ul><li>Journalistic intuition, which, I think, is not taught;</li><li>Journalistic experience;</li><li>Reporter’s internal culture and ethics;</li><li>Fluency.</li></ul>&nbsp;Clearly, the mere existence of these skills, taken alone, can do nothing if it is not accompanied by the image of a journalist and the trust of the public. The latter is created over the years.&nbsp;As you know, it is not only the journalist who works on the reportage, therefore, professionalism is needed in all segments in order for the result to be the best.&nbsp;Non-interference is important!&nbsp;In order to reach the result, two more factors must be taken into account:1. Relevance of the topic;2. Guarantee of non-interference by the employer or the producer.&nbsp;Full independence in the reporting process is an important prerequisite so that it does not serve the interests of either party.&nbsp;I – Reporter&nbsp;Reportage is my favorite genre. Reporting means being constantly at the epicenter of events. In all my reportages I feel a responsibility to my audience. I constantly try to be objective, operative and, most importantly, unbiased. My mission is doing live reportages.&nbsp;I do not have any exceptionally memorable reportages, because all my reports, I think, are memorable. It cannot be otherwise, when you often have to do this work at the risk of your own health. For example, last year I injured my leg while covering a large-scale flood in Racha. It can be said that then reportage was remembered not only for me, but also for the whole Oni municipality.&nbsp;Situation - extreme, emotion - zero!&nbsp;Personally, I have repeatedly proved that it is possible for a journalist to maintain a neutral tone in extreme situations: not to follow emotions and convey the message as calmly as possible, but this does not mean to go to the other extreme and, for example, have a happy face when covering a tragedy.&nbsp;One important skill I have developed over the years is to work in a heavy emotional atmosphere: when I cover a tragedy, everything around is ruined, people search among the debris, pull out the dead and hear cries, even in such a situation I try to be emotionally neutral and informative. At this point I have to think about the misfortune that has happened and the viewer who is already depressed by all this. I also think that I should not burst into tears while being live or even worse, faint... Trust me, this ability is not easy to achieve. And at the end of the day, when I am no longer live and stop working, I may even cry and lose the ability to even say a word, but the viewer will not be able to see it.&nbsp;Livestreaming and recording&nbsp;We must first find out if the story is over. If the event has already happened, the reporter’s narration from the scene is no longer appropriate. In this case, it is better to install. In such a format it is necessary to tell a detailed story. It should include all possible aspects of the topic. But, if the story is not over yet, a reporter narrating the story directly from the spot is an ideal option.&nbsp;In any case, we must remember that a good reporter makes the viewer feel as if he is not in front of the television, but at the scene, - said Irma Choladze, the regional correspondent of the Public Broadcaster “Moambe”.&nbsp;Soso Gazdeliani

<div id="print-area">Some media outlets are often destructive to society: offering them a turbulent flow of information that carries sensational, narrow-minded political ideology and mercantile goals which remain beyond ethical norms.&nbsp;Safe, constructive media outlets, by their very nature, confront these important violations and show the public that it is possible to provide information to them even without causing panic and confusion.“The existence of safe and constructive mass media is becoming even more important in today's reality against the background of technology development, high competition and fake news as the main challenge of the media,” stated Tamta Sanikidze, journalist and host of the Georgian First Channel News Bulletin “Moambe”. According to her, the media often becomes a source of spectators’ psycho-trauma and not a provider of information.&nbsp;CIU Multimedia Center offers an extensive interview with Tamta Sanikidze, a journalist of the Public Broadcaster, about safe media.&nbsp;Safe Media Model - How do you envisage the functions of this type of medium and its existence?&nbsp;I envisage the role and functions of safe and constructive media are as follows:<ul><li>Unbiased, objective and neutral coverage of the current events in the country;</li><li>Reflecting the positions of all parties and offering them to the audience;</li><li>In-depth search of the problem without a political context;</li><li>Coverage of events in a way that does not have a negative impact on human health and psychics;</li><li>Concentrating on real and current problems for citizens and, instead of looking for sensations and scandals, focus on ways to solve them with competent people;</li><li>Deprived of the kind of sensationalism that often does not correspond to reality and, in order to increase the rating, only aims to strain and put pressure on the public.</li></ul>&nbsp;While a large number of private TV stations act in the possible political interests of their owners and consider coverage of current events in the country in this context. I think it is the direct duty of the public broadcaster as the only media institution accountable to the public. Georgian Public Broadcaster has been acting as a safe media in recent years.&nbsp;Based on the demands on the constructive media, our public broadcaster is also launching a model of constructive news that has already been tested and established in many European countries: coverage of events without scandal and superficial narration, as well as concentrating on the main story and the real problems.&nbsp;Destructive media environment and society - what effect does the sensational, polarized and “aggressive” media have on the psycho-emotional state of society? What are the dangers facing a society that receives a destructive flow of information on a daily basis?&nbsp;Due to political interests, the destructive agenda of some media and the coverage of events only in a negative context naturally cause nihilism and panic in the society, which obviously has a negative impact on their psycho-emotional state. This is a manipulative impact on society in the process of perceiving events. People get the feeling that everything in the country is deteriorating and they cannot change anything. This is exactly the goal of a particular media: to offer events to the audience only from its point of view, to look beyond all events for traces of political power undesirable to it, and to connect all negative stories, directly or indirectly, with this political entity.&nbsp;The viewer's psyche is destroyed against the background of achieving political goals through the media and, in many cases, s/he loses the desire to listen to the news altogether. The increase in political polarization, naturally, is automatically reflected in the media environment, and in such a situation, the destructive media agenda is aimed at further deepening the polarization, instead of decreasing it.&nbsp;The role of safe media became even more obvious during the pandemic. In this case, too, the public broadcaster, as a safe media, has remained loyal to its principles: providing viewers with &nbsp;double-checked information based on scientific researches about the virus that is still unknown to the world, offering interviews only with competent people, scientists, professionals who are directly fighting against the disease and refusing to disseminate any unverified information that could have a major impact on increasing rating and grasping viewers' attention.&nbsp;Sensation and scandal as a public order or a mercantile calculation of the media?&nbsp;Focusing on sensation and scandal unfortunately remains a priority for a large part of the media. Clearly, there is a desire to increase the rating more than the public order. Naturally, viewers are interested in any scandalous story, tragedy, conflict, but making it a priority to cover similar events and facts helps to destroy their psyche rather than informing the audience. With a few exceptions, a display of emotionally difficult moments to a person cannot be public order. Of course, the viewer should be accordingly informed about any tragedy or sensational story. However, the intense coverage of such scandals by the media, with the desire to increase the rating and considering the commercial interests, unfortunately is presented as viewers’ order, which is wrong. Here we must keep in mind that the media should offer the viewer a way to solve a specific problem when covering any, even sensational, story, and not leave them face to face with the problem.&nbsp;Tasks facing the media while covering sensitive issues - how should events of similar content be covered so that the process does not become a chain and is not a threat or a basis for copying for even one person?&nbsp;Coverage of sensitive news requires a particularly careful approach, strict adherence to professional ethics, and great responsibility. It is important to cover the most serious events in a way that does not negatively affect the psychics of the participants in the event or in any way related to them and the audience.&nbsp;Particular care should be taken when covering juvenile-related topics or suicides. This issue becomes even more relevant against the background of the fact that some forms of media try to cover such sensitive topics in a sensational context, which often violates the rights of minors, the presumption of innocence, gossip or information spread on the social network is offered to the viewer as a reality, moments of misfortune and tragedy are sometimes broadcast live, the person is shown in the most difficult moments, the privacy is often violated, which leads to irreparable consequences. Creating unfounded panic and spreading unrealistic information can do great damage to a particular person’s reputation.&nbsp;All guidelines for ethical coverage of events state that the media should try to avoid focusing on the suffering of people in shock and grief, and displaying horrific material over and over again so as not to retaliate against those involved. However, these norms and standards are unfortunately often violated. In such a case, the media becomes a source of psycho-trauma for the viewer and not a provider of information.&nbsp;While covering any tragedy, sensitive news or terrorist acts:<ul><li>The norms of the Code of Conduct for Broadcasters must be strictly observed;</li><li>We must try takee into consideration the interests of the victims and the participants of the tragedy;</li><li>Refrain from reproducing the heaviest materials;</li><li>We should carefully select the respondents who will provide us with only verified information and not - assumptions;</li><li>When covering such events, the most important thing is accuracy, repeated verification of information and so on;</li><li>We must remember that the main mission of the media is not to influence people through tragedies and scandals and to manipulate their emotions, but to constructively inform the public and show ways to solve a specific problem.</li></ul>The role of the media in encouraging and reducing bad habits and the practice of constructive media in this regardThe media plays a big role in encouraging or reducing bad habits and getting rid of them. Compared to commercial television, the responsibilities, mission and function of the public broadcaster are even more important even in this case. First of all, the Public Broadcaster, as a responsible and cognitive-media-oriented media institution, should try to minimize the placement of gambling or other harmful habits in its own network. In this regard, the decision made in October 2019 was unprecedented and vital, according to which the First Channel of Georgia refused to place and replicate gambling advertisements in the broadcast network. It is true that the broadcasting of this type of material is not prohibited by law, however, in this case, the Public Broadcaster has fulfilled its fundamental mission, which is to respond to public demands, fight against bad habits and promote a healthy lifestyle in the community.The situation is much more complicated in the case of commercial broadcasters, which are funded by advertising revenue, although they must take into account the possible risks and negative consequences of replicating similar content.&nbsp;Soso Gazdeliani</div>

The audience, who has profound knowledge in any of the above or some of the above fields, is well aware of the superficiality of the topic covered by a journalist, low professionalism or lack of in-depth knowledge of the issue.&nbsp;Deficiency of Sectoral Journalists in the Modern Media SpaceThe issue of supply-demand is in the first place in the media, as in all areas. Supply has long exceeded demand. Today, our media space is largely saturated with political content, therefore, the demand is more for socio-political journalists from the media, which makes the media environment somewhat chaotic, polarized and visibly biased, deteriorating the essence of journalism.Sports and culture journalism is relatively balanced in the modern media space, while other areas are almost unrepresented.&nbsp;Functional Sense of Sectoral MediaSectoral media is also a social institution, which, in addition to providing timely and objective information to the public, is responsible for providing more in-depth knowledge of issues and orienting the audience to help them choose the right direction in the short or long term.For example, we have defined main vector of our channel – “Agro-Garemo TV” since its foundation, which is aimed at in-depth coverage of agro and environmental issues. Today, global climate change is urgently facing plans and stability in any field, its development. Adapting to change and reducing the negative impact is especially important in agriculture to ensure food security. That is why we constantly strive to provide our viewers with important information in both of the above areas.&nbsp;Challenges Faced by Sectoral Media and the Essential Difference from the Broad Profile MediumSectoral media, unlike broad profile media, has far more challenges due to its narrow, niche direction. First of all, these challenges are faced by such “wasteful” media as television. With the right planning, it is quite possible for industry television to have even more revenue. Nevertheless, according to the audience and access rates, it is difficult to target niche media in Georgia with large revenues. Even the scarcity of finances can lead to an outflow of staff.&nbsp;The Trend of Development of Sectoral Journalism in Modern Media Space and Media SchoolsI cannot say that there are many sectoral channels in the media space. From time to time niche media representatives appear on the providers and after a few years we see them rebranding, changing direction or disappearing altogether, which unfortunately does more harm to the promising young people.Media schools gradually introduce courses in various fields, it is important that professors, in addition to academic teaching, also focus on current topics and try to integrate them into teaching process.&nbsp;Soso Gazdeliani</div>
